Offshore wind business to launch new centre of excellence in Aberdeen

A Scottish business specialising in supporting offshore wind projects has confirmed a £1.6 million investment in delivering a new Centre of Excellence in Aberdeen. Sarens PSG states that the new facility will generate new jobs and help strengthen the growth of the UK offshore wind industry.

The group announced the final decision to base the centre in Aberdeen, emphasising that confirmation that GB Energy will be located in the same area as a significant pull. Energy Secretary Ed Milliband explained that the plan to locate GB Energy in the North East had already yielded benefits.

The new Centre of Excellence will be based in the Energy Transition Zone in Aberdeen, within the Altens Industrial Estate. Expected to be live next year, the site will be passed over by the end of the year after the business acquired it from Aberdeen developer Forbes Homes.

Steve Clark, MD of Sarens PSG, believes that GB Energy Headquarters will transform the city and the wider energy sector for Scotland. Clark explains that the presence of GB Energy in Aberdeen, alongside the £400 million South Harbour development and other offshore wind projects, makes the city the ideal location for the new Centre of Excellence.

In the last month, the chairman of GB Energy Jurgen Maier, stated that the business would deliver 300 jobs at its Aberdeen-based headquarters, despite original suggestions the job count would exceed 1000. The UK Government explained that the adjusted figure related to a short-term goal.

GB Energy will own and manage clean energy projects nationwide, supported by a financial backing of £8.3 billion. Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary Ed Milliband believes GB Energy has already got off to an excellent start in accelerating clean energy across the UK. Milliband believes the base in Aberdeen has sparked investment and new jobs and will ensure the city becomes the clean energy hub for Scotland.

The site will have heavy-duty potential, including inspection pits, brake testing machinery, a wash bay to support Sarens PSGs crane fleet and other heavy lifting equipment.
