Vestas Will Deliver Turbines For Major German Offshore Wind Project
Vestas has announced a significant order for V236-15.0 MW wind turbines for the Vattengall Nordlicht 1 offshore wind project. The agreement was confirmed on March 31st for the supply, installation and commissioning of the turbines. The contract details include a detailed five-year service and warranty agreement and an additional 25-year operational support agreement.
The order for Nordlicht 1 totals 1,020 MW, with a grid connection capacity of nearly 980 MW, and an additional capacity of 40 MW to apply the connection capacity as effectively as possible. Nils de Baar, the president for Vestas Northern and Central Europe, explains that Germany’s energy transition has reached a defining point - balancing security, affordability and sustainability. De Baar highlights that Vattenfall is driving the change and creating the solutions to make it secure, resilient and accessible for everyone. De Baar is excited to launch the wind turbines to Nordlicht 1 and generate low-emission steel for the project.
Catrin Jung, the head of the offshore business unit at Vattenfall, explains that Nordlicht reinforces their journey towards a fossil-free future, delivering the largest offshore wind farm for Germany, making a considerable investment towards industry decarbonisation and delivering clean, reliable energy. Jung highlights that they are happy to continue their partnership with Vestas, driving innovation and low-emission technologies to strengthen the energy transition in Germany and Europe.
Both businesses are reinforcing their goals to reduce emissions within the entire value chain. Certain parts of the towers for Nordlicht will consist of low-emission steel, resulting in a 16% reduction in the overall carbon footprint. The low-emission steel is designed with 100% steel scrap melted in an electric arc furnace, driven by 10% wind energy, lowering the carbon footprint by 66%.
The Nordlicht Wind Farm is located a little over 50 miles north of Borkum Island in the German North Sea. The site consists of two locations - Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2. Vestas and Vattenfall agreed on a conditional order in June 2024 for both sites. Nordlicht 1 is due to begin in 2026. Based on the current planning stages, the wind turbines for Nordlicht 1 are due to be installed in 2027, and the wind farm is due to be in operation by 2028.
